Our Work

Just Rights for Children (JRC) believes that justice for victims and their families must be accessible to all, and should comprise legal support, a child-centered approach by law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, adequate compensation, and their rehabilitation.

We operate by building collaboration between governments and communities, creating partnerships with key stakeholders, investing in child protection institutions, education, healthcare, justice delivery, and rehabilitation of survivors and their families.

To eliminate all forms of violence against children, especially girls, we have categorized the issues into four groups.

CHILD MARRIAGE

Child marriage is a violation of children’s rights, a violence against children, and a precursor to child sexual abuse. Yet poverty, inequality, and outdated societal norms all contribute to a situation where girls, and sometimes boys, are still subjected to child marriage.

Our partners raise awareness about child marriage laws and the right to education, empowering children and communities to reject child marriage. They also intervene through legal action to prevent child marriages before they occur and to create a strong legal deterrent against the practice.

CHILD TRAFFICKING

Child trafficking a highly organized crime which also results in rampant sexual abuse and rape of children, child labor, slavery, prostitution, or other forms of exploitation. It is a crime of economics, power, and patriarchy which is reflected in the large number of children getting trafficked into marriage. Children are forced into employment because they are the cheapest form of labor. They are also sexually exploited as they are the easiest to subjugate.

Our partners work to rescue and rehabilitate children who have been trafficked into labor, marriage, commercial sexual exploitation, and other forms of exploitation, and support their legal claims to back-wages and compensation.

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

Child sexual abuse is one of the worst forms of violence against children, viciously curtailing childhoods and usually resulting in long-term harm. Globally, the prevalence of child sexual abuse remains alarmingly high, manifesting as commercial sexual exploitation, child marriage, sexual assault, or online child sexual exploitation material.

We support survivors to report their crimes, offer rehabilitation through counselling and mental health support, and provide legal support to accelerate the passage of their cases through the courts. We sensitize children and communities to understand their rights about their bodies and the law on child sexual abuse by running awareness activities and campaigns.

ONLINE CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

Online Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) is a global problem. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of reported cases of online CSEAM, and these have seen an exponential increase since the pandemic.

We raise awareness about how perpetrators trap children online and partner with central and state governments and law enforcement agencies and works with them to enhance reporting, response, regulation, tracking, monitoring, and rehabilitation for victims of online sexual abuse.

OUR THEORY OF CHANGE

JRC fights for justice to bring about the behavioral and systemic change required for a lasting, sustainable impact on child protection issues - child marriage, child trafficking, child labor, and child sexual abuse including online - through awareness and legal deterrence.

We ensure that the cycle of justice must result in closure for victims and their families, reformation of perpetrators, and deterrence for society.

OUR APPROACH

Through the implementation of a systematic, highly focused, and intensive intervention model, we are working towards effectively addressing the root causes of these heinous crimes. JRC’s partners follow the PICKET strategy to end violence against children –

  • Policy intervention for prevention, protection, prosecution and rehabilitation.

  • Investment in Infrastructure and Institutional framework.

  • Convergence of services, Capacity building, Collaboration of stakeholders, and Communication in real-time for action against crime.

  • Knowledge and awareness at all levels so that all stakeholders such as children, parents, law enforcement agencies and institutions make informed decisions.

  • Economics of the crime understood and addressed, Ecosystem level response and 12 years of free, quality, public education for every child.

  • Technology for change, deterrence, monitoring and time-bound justice delivery.
